No Different Yet Special

You are, by all definition, a handful of bulbs
A tiny smattering of the millions if not billions
That each Spring, past present and future
Awake from the earth to 'be'..

Each of you here with me is like your sisters
Inhabiting countries, islands, states, cities, towns
Your existance is linked to pots, plots and windowboxes
Of warming earth

You, each of you, who I think of as 'mine'
Are no different than your sisters
Heads raised to the faltering returning
Gentle Spring Sun
No different
Yet Special

I remember the day I found each of you
I was with my Mum at a big box store

I recall the sign that proclaimed your value
was designated by retail to be no more than 50 cents each
I was saddened and annoyed that they valued you so little

I was brokenhearted to hear the plan was to trash each of you
who went 'unpurchased'
by that weeks end...

I smile remembering my mother at my side
Helping me place as many of you into my cart as we could fit
Saving as many of you as the budget would allow
(I whispered a sad word of apology to those I could not save)

Driving home, she and I talked of gardens, of growth, of time
And in the coming days I planted you, one by one
In half frozen earth covering you with thatch to hide you
(a tiny bit)
from grazing hungry searching deer

Fragments of memory
Moments of time
Frozen in my soul
That come alive each Spring
Along with your return

You are no different
Than your millions, billions, zillions
Of sisters over the world,
thru ever returning Springs

But you are special
You who I think of
as
mine

In the home stretch

Mini Daffs
Photo FDFerris
Week upon week
 Of four degrees
 Week upon week of
   Fourteen degrees
    Winds that howled
     As wolves-a-hunting

     But yesterday
      But today
        Fifty degrees
         Forty degress

Sun and sky send snow on her way
              It's a short reprieve I know
]

But it's Spring, peeking around the corner
Just before she enters the year

Brrrrrr....

A fairly quiet day - certainly more quiet than yesterday (but we won't even go into it, lol)
There's a great deal more snow now than there was when I grabbed this image in late Fall
But (window screen aside) it does show how snow has found its way
into every corner of the world here, lol
The snow, the cold
set to the countdown
of days until Spring!

She Decided

Sometimes she wished she were a tree
So she could see into the distance
and hear the songs of the birds
note by note
all around her

If she were a tree
 high in the sky
 the perils of the ground
couldn't easily
reach her

Some days she longed to be
part of the leaves and moss
that covered the ground
below her
low lying and endless in number
so no one would even notice her

But each morning
she awoke to find she was
neither a tree
nor leaf or moss

She was not tall and safe
She was not short and invisible
She
Was
(in fact)
Yellow
Obvious
Delicate
 Embattled

She decided her best
(and only)
choice
was
to be brave
to be cheeerful
and to look fiesty
(fiesty as hell)
for as long
as
she
possibly
could

Peep (non marshmallow, lol)

No matter if you're a chicken lover or not, you have to admit 'chicks' are SO cute! (and clueless, lol)

Imperatives

Spring. It's all about imperatives. The birds must build nests. The grass must grow. Trees spend their days leafing. Frogs spend their nites singing. Concise, unquestionably clear. Who does what. Who does what when.

It's something that, at this phase of life, I miss....

I've arrived at the part of life-journey-ing which is free of prescribed imperatives. Not, mind you, that I necessarily heeded any of them when they applied, yet they were posted signs on the route. Carefully lettered, pounded into the ground. At predictable intervals they lingered. Read them, heed them, ignore them as I pleased, they were there.

The path winds now. Unmarked. Pleasant.

Oddly there are far more life-maintaining-imperatives. But few if any personal imperatives. Freedom amid frey. Exhilarating or confounding? Yes. Both. Neither. A mix of emotions that refuse to be named. Inspiration or anxiety? Yes. Peak and valley in rapid alternating succession with no plain betwixt and between.

Tick toc calls out the hand less clock.

My imperatives now.... None? Many? Yes. And no.

The path unfolds without signposts pounded in. No predictable intervals now.
Free to create, dance with life, dream.

Uplifting? Happy? Perplexed? Bad?

Yes.

And no.

Old enough to no longer be young. Young enough to not yet be venerable. Smarter than ever I was. More patient. More appreciative. Less patient. More confused. Wanting to conquer so much more than I would have dreamt (or dared before). But just what? Just when? Just how?

No imperatives. My call. My choice. My journey.

Turn left? Right? Rest? Run? Wait and see? Wing it? Plan? Pounce?

Yes. And no.

And so I go ....

Thrilled by the lack of (yet missing) imperatives.

HAPPINESS

The sun is gaining strength, the birdsongs have returned....
The days lengthen and every aspect of life eases with the arrival of Spring.

Contentment is once again found in the return of this happy season!
